6th Grade Math

Monday:  No school.  Tuesday:  Lesson 6.  Wednesday:  Lesson 7.  Thursday:  Lesson 8.  Friday:  Lesson 9.  POTW due 9/10/10.  (Corrections starting with P.S. 1)  

POTW:  A fireman stood on the middle rung of a ladder pouring water on a building.  As the smoke cleared, he stepped up 3 rungs.  A sudden flare-up forced him to go down 5 rungs.  Later he climbed 7 rungs to work on the fire.  Then he climbed the remaining 6 rungs to the top of the ladder and stepped off to stand on the roof.  How many rungs did the ladder have?  Explain your thinking and your answer.

POTW:  A salesman packs dog biscuits in boxes containing 16, 17, 23, or 24 pounds each.  He will not sell them in any other sizes or split a box.  A customer wants exactly 100 pounds of the biscuits, no more or no less.  Can the salesman fill the order?  If not, how close can he come to making up the 100 pounds?  He has as many of each size box as he might need.
